John enlisted to fight in World War I in about 1918 and on March 1, 1919 he married Ethel Muliesie [Melissa] Bailey in Van Zandt County, Texas. They had three sons and a daughter.
In the summer of 1937 John Stanbery was farming on his land in the Starr community when his appendix ruptured. He was taken to St. Paul hospital in Dallas where he died at 10:30 a.m. on August 15th. His funeral was held at Starr Church on Monday, August 16th at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Calmes & Rev. Bally conducting.
