Josefine (Josephine) Palivec was born Feb 23, 1896 in Drahlín, Austria-Hungary (Bohemia), now Czech Republic. At age 16, she departed Bremen, Germany on May 11, 1912 on the ship Friedrich der Grosse, travelling alone, and arrived in New York on May 22, 1912. She travelled in 2nd Cabin accomodations. Josephine listed her residence as Drahlín, Bohemia, Austria, where she worked as a maid and servant. She planned to join her brother in law Frank Muzik, 12806 Union Ave, Cleveland, Ohio. Family records indicate she came to U.S. on June 8, 1912, which could have been her arrival date in Cleveland. Josefine was the fifth person in her family to make the trip, following Mary, John, Rose, and Antonia. She was the last one to travel alone. The rest of the family travelled as a group of ten in April 1913.

At age 23, she married John Vostrak on Jul 19, 1919, and had eight children of her own between 1916 and 1929. She also had a stepson, Frank, born in 1906. John had been previously married and was a widower at the time of their marriage.

Listed in the 1920 Census, age 23, living at 5303 Mound Ave, Cleveland, OH, with husband, John, 33, a foundry molder, and children, Frank, 13, Anna, 3, John, 2, and Helen, 9 months. John and Josephine were born in Bohemia, while all four children were born in Ohio. John and Jospehine listed as aliens.

Josephine lived in Brecksville, OH. She died May 29, 1929, age 33, in Cleveland, OH, just more than three weeks after the birth of her daughter Barbara. Josephine was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Cleveland, OH, Section 57, Lot 411.
