"In Loving Remembrance of
Our Dear One
James McKillip Died Dec. 8, 1906
Age 86 years.
A Light is from our household gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
That never can be filled.
We cannot tell who next may fall,
Beneath thy chastening rod,
One must be first, but let us all,
Prepare to meet our God."
James McKillip was the son of Daniel McKillip and Nancy Lawson. He was born in Jefferson Township Fayette County, Ohio. He was married on Feb. 11, 1845 to Susanna Kendall. "Susyann" was the daughter of Joseph Kendall and Pheobe Henkle. Susannah died 1859 or 1860 there are conflicting records about the date. James second wife was Elizabeth Fleek, daughter of Conrad Fleek and Nancy Leatherman. They were married on Feb. 14, 1861.
His parents, Daniel McKillip and Nancy Lawson, came from Ohio to Indiana in 1828. He grew up in Tippecanoe County, near Battle Ground. His father died when he was 11 years old. His mother, Nancy married a second time to a widower, John White in 1836 when James was 15. John White died in 1846 when James was 25. About that time he and his wife Susannah move to White County in the 130th district in the area that would become Princeton near Wolcott. He worked as a farmer, and attended the Christian church in Wolcott. His mother, Nancy married a final time to her brother in-law, William Kendall in 1847 after the death of Daniel McKillip's sister Elizabeth McKillip Kendall.
My father was only 6 when his grandfather died. He remembered that James McKillip had a long white beard that was invariably stained with tobacco juice.
His siblings included:
William, Lucinda, John, Caroline, Jackson, and Louisa McKillip
Step-daughter Mary Ann Fleek .
