In 1912 her husband, Marshall, died leaving Ella a widow with 5 chldren to raise. She took in wash, she ran a boarding house. She raised vegitables in the garden and some how managed to feed her family. All the children helped, working at various jobs. The older girls helped with the washing and ironing, and Lawrence delivered papers and shone shoes before and after school. On weekends he hunted and fished to provide meat for the family. They got buy and had a strong work ethic.
In 1920 she married a second time to Patrick Byrnes.
She died after a long illness. My father was in Canada where I had just been born and had not heard of her death. My Aunts Elva and Golda prayed that he would call them, and he did. That was when he found out his mother had died and he went home to bury her while my mother and I remained in Canada for a few more weeks until my Christening.
