Earl Franklin Overby, age 53, died unexpectedly October 15, 2002 at the Santa Rosa Medical Center Emergency room in Milton, Santa Rosa County, Florida due to a heart attack. He was the son (youngest child ) of the late Charles Henry Overby (1906-1996) and Lula Beatrice Mangum Overby (1909-2010). He was born in Rebecca, Turner County, Georgia on 13 March 1949. He had eight siblings: Billy Clyde Mangum (1930-1950 MIA Korean War), Izola Overby Skipper (1932-2011), Dorothy Mae Overby Lacey (1934-1972), Henry Delano "Buddy" Overby (living in Winonna, Missouri), Clarence Wyman Overby (Living with wife Carol in Verbena, Alabama), Clinton Lee "Zeke" Overby (1941-2013), Joyce Helen Overby Burge (living in Juliette, Georgia), and John Kenneth "Johnny" Overby (1947-2009). He also had 3 half siblings: Evelyn Addie Overby Massey (1925-1999), Homer Geneva Overby (1928-1933), and Charles David Overby (1930-2007).
He graduated from Turner County High School in 1967 and entered the U.S. Navy where he served as a communications technician for six years. He went back to school, earning his bachelor's degree in 1976 and his JD from DePaul University Law School in 1979. Earl returned to the Navy as an officer, serving in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps for 20 years and retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1994. He joined a private practice that year, and in 2000, he struck out on his own, starting his own practice where he handled both family and criminal law. He entered into the Florida Bar 1994.
Earl enjoyed golf and other sports (when his knees would allow it), reading, and spending time with his New Warrington friends and was a resident of Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida. He was a faithful friend and generous to anyone who had a need.
He is survived by his wife, Tracey Schnell Overby: daughter, Stephanie Jo; son, Jeremy Earl; mother Beatrice Overby; brothers Charles Overby, Henry D. Overby, Clarence W. Overby, Clinton L. Overby, and Kenneth John Overby; sisters, Izola Skipper and Helen Burdge: and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Warrington from 11:30 am to 1 pm with services following. Oak Lawn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Redeemer Lutheran Parish Activity Center.
He was buried at the Barrancas National Cemetery with full military honors in Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida.
