Thomas Wilkinson Greear was the son of John R. and Nancy (Craig) Greear. John R. Greear enlisted in the Civil War at Camp Butler in Springfield, Illinois. The family was living in the area of Ramsey, Fayette County, Illinois at the time. John R. Greear died in January 1863 while serving in the Civil War. Thomas Greear and his brothers James and George Washington Greear were raised in Fayette and Montgomery County, Illinois.

Thomas married Emma Noblitt on August 3, 1882 in Edwardsville, Illinois. They lived in rural Madison County, Illinois south of Staunton until 1894. They moved to a farm near Lebanon, Laclede County, Missouri, moving back to Madison County in 1904 and settling in Edwardsville where Thomas was a farmer and coal miner. He was also an accomplished wood worker, a tradition that has endured for several generations of Greear descendants.

Thomas and Emma were the parents of 15 children: Laura, Nellie, Edward Karl, Beulah (Eula or Ullie), Ida Mae, Grace, Alonzo Pierce (Lon), Oren Jesse, Clarence Eugene, Melvin, William, Elwood, Matilda (Tillie), Emmett Clarence and Hazel B. Greear.
