They were the parents of three sons: James William Greear, born August 19, 1857 in Benton County, Tennessee; Thomas Wilkenson Greear,born December 24, 1859 also in Benton County, Tennessee; and George Washington Greear, born February 21, 1862 in Ramsey, Fayette County, Illinois.
John R. Greear enlisted in the Civil War as a Private at Camp Butler in Company F, 97th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry for three years. He became ill and died on January 13, 1863 aboard the steamboat Robert Campbell at Arkansas Post, Arkansas.
Nancy had two additional sons, Isaiah and David Greear. She married Elijah Canfield in Montgomery County, Illinois on December 4, 1874.
