Edward Karl Greear was the 3rd child of Thomas W. and Emma (Noblitt) Greear. His date of birth is listed as Jan 6, 1888 based on family information given by his parents for the 1900 and 1920 Federal Census. Dates for the Social Security Death Index and the Minnesota Death Index are Other birth dates are 1884 and 1885 respectively. As shown in the photo, his tombstone lists 1886.

He changed from being known as Edward to Karl and back to Edward again, but mainly he was known as Karl Greear. He grew up in Edwardsville, Illinois and for several years the family lived in Laclede County, Missouri.

Karl was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War I serving as a mechanic. Karl was installed as commander of Luverne VFW Post, in Rock County, Minnesota in November 1936. He is also listed as the quartermaster of that VFW Post in 1944.

Karl and Katherine Mary Schedel were married about 1921 and they settled in first in South Dakota and later moved to Minnesota. He operated a greenhouse and nursery and for a time had his nephew Leo Greear work for him. Karl and Katherine were the parents of a son, Roland.
