1939 - 2009
Terry Gene Leon, 69, of C. Thompson Road, Morehead, KY, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009, at his residence.
Born November 20, 1939, in Little Falls, NY, he was the son of Charles Leon, Sr. and Edna Johnson Leon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Edna May Barney, Harold Leon, Charles (Whitey) Leon, Jr. and Richard Leon, and two great grandchildren, Zachary Andrea and Brianna Buell.
Terry is survived by his wife of 37 years, Chieko Suguwara Leon; two children, Terry Leon, Jr. and Lauri Buell, both of Ilion, NY; two stepchildren, Dr. Mary Phillips of Morehead, KY, and Robert Smith of Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren, Jason Leon, Alex Leon, Brett Leon, Kara-Lee Andrea, Brittany Buell, Sara Phillips, Casey Phillips, and Amber Smith; and three great-grandchildren, Jaydon Leon, Noah Andrea and Tyler Andrea. Other survivors include five brothers, Denny Leon of Copperas Cove, TX, Dayton Leon of Little Falls, NY, Gordon Leon of Hinesville, GA, Thomas Leon of Lawton, OK, and Leo Leon of Little Falls, NY; and two sisters, Patricia Tennant of Webster, MA, and Shirley Ashley of Little Falls, NY.
Terry was a dedicated and faithful volunteer at the People's Clinic for several years. There was nowhere else he would rather be on clinic days than helping fellow clinic staff take care of patients. He was a member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church where he devoutly served as a minister of communion and as a member of the parish council. He was also a tireless advocate of veterans. At the time of his death he was a member of the Corbie Ellington Post 126 American Legion in Morehead as well as the Area C Commander for the state of Kentucky. Past positions included Commander of American Legion Post 7 in Frankfort, KY and District 9 Commander for the state of Kentucky. He served as an American Legion Boys State Senior Counselor where he helped to mentor and motivate young men. Also at the time of his death he was president of the Rowan County Veterans Association and was a lifetime member of the 40/8 society. Perhaps his most treasured role was serving in the American Legion Honor Guard where his job was to present the flag to surviving family members at funeral services for veterans.
At the request of Mr. Leon, no services are planned. Inurnment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Frankfort, KY.
Arrangements by Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
