James T. Hughes, son of Nicholas S. and Hannah C. Hughes, was born near Scottville, Ill., December 18, 1867, and died suddenly at his home in this city, Sunday, June 7, 1931, at the age of 63 years, 5 months and 21 days.
On September 27, 1896, he married Adelia Vance, who preceded him in death January 25, 1927. Four children were born to this union, Mrs. Viola Stockamp of Raymond, Mrs. Elsie Quinn of Lowder, and Lester Hughes, of this city; one daughter, Dorothy, dying at the age of six months.
He was married to Clara Johnson, July 7, 1928, and she was with him at the time he was stricken by death, and did all possible to minister to him.
He was converted in early life. About thirty years ago he united with the M. E. Church, South, and was a member of the official board at the time of his death.
Besides his wife and three children, he is survived by five brothers and two sisters, namely Richard and John of Springfield; Henry, of Peoria, Lewis, of Centralia; Oscar, of Waverly; Mrs. Clara Palmer, of Riverton; and Mrs. Maud Lambert, of Springfield; also five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church, South, Tuesday afternoon, June 9, at 2 o'clock, in charge of the pastor, Rev. T. H. Balllarby, assisted by Rev.
W. T. Mathis.
Burial was in Waverly cemetery.
