Oscar Hughes, a former resident of Waverly, died Thursday morning last week, July 24, at a hospital in Jacksonville.
Deceased was born near Manchester March 21, 1876, a son of the late Nicholas and Hannah Thompson Hughes.
He was a veteran of the Spanish American war and also of World War I. Following his retirement from the service, he resided in Waverly for a number of years. For the past few years he has lived at different points in Florida and Virginia, having just recently come to Jacksonville.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Seven brothers and three sisters preceded him in death, namely, John, Henry, Richard, Louis, William, Ira and James Hughes, Mrs. Mary Knight, Mrs. Clara Palmer and Mrs. Maude Lambert.
Funeral services were held at the Neece Funeral Home Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. A. Ogden, pastor of the Baptist church.
Burial was in East cemetery, with military rites conducted by Waverly American Legion Post 262.
