Nicholas Smith Hughes was born December 13, 1837, in Overton County, Tennessee. His father being a Methodist minister he was reared in a Christian home and at the age of 13 years he was left fatherless but he still followed the good training of his parents.
At the age of 20 years he was united in marriage to Hannah Thompson of the same county. In the year of 1861, he with his family of wife and two children, emigrated to Illinois, settling in Macoupin county, and have ever since resided not far from that place.
Eleven children were born to this union, namely, George W. died in the year 1895, John M., of Waverly, Richard S. of Springfield, Lewis R. of McDougal, Ark., James B. of Waverly, Ira C. of Centralia, Nicholas H. of Springfield, Mary B. Knight died in 1905, Charles Oscar of Waverly, Clara J. Palmer of Carlinville and Maude B. Lambert of Waverly. Besides his wife and children, he is survived by a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.
One year ago in July, he was stricken with paralysis and from that time on until death, at 5:15 a.m., October 13, 1919, he was a patient sufferer. He was 81 years and 10 months old at the time of his death. He lived a devoted Christian life, always had prayer in the family. He was a loving husband and father, ever trying to help those in need.
Funeral services were held at the M. E. church South Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, in charge of Rev. G. B. Sherman. Interment was in East cemetery.
