Born Aug. 28, 1903, in Wilkin County, he was the son of Carl and Louisa Max. He grew up in Wilkin County and moved to Fergus Falls where he owned and operated a grocery store on East Washington Avenue for 33 years, retiring in 1971.
He was married to Hazel Schumann June 6, 1934, at Trinity Lutheran parsonage, Fergus Falls.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife; three brothers and four sisters: Eddie, Charles, Otto, Clara Max, Emma Max, Ida Max, and Mrs. Wilfred (Louise) Barringer, all of Breckenridge. A sister, Lena Bullene, died in 1972.
Visitation starting Sunday at the Glende-Johnson-Nelson Funeral Home.
