In 1860 he lived with his parents and two sisters on a farm near Worthington, PA. His father was renting the farm and had personal property valued at $439.

In 1870 he lived with his parents and five sisters on a farm in Perry Township, Armstrong County, PA. His father was renting the farm and had personal property valued at $200.

In 1880 he lived with his parents, brother, and six sisters in Millerstown (now Chicora), PA. He and his father were laborers.

In 1900 he lived with his wife and four daughters in a house they were renting in Middlesex Township, Butler County, PA. He was an Oil Pumper. According to the census record they had been married ten years.

In 1910 he and his wife and their three daughters and one son lived on a farm on the Chicora and Karns City Road (probably what is called Fairmont Road today) in Fairview Township, Butler County, PA. They owned the farm, with a mortgage, and William's occupation was given as farmer. Interestingly, the census record shows that this was a second marriage for both of them, and that they had been married just 17 years. William's brother John lived next door to them, and then Mary's brother and sister, Abel and Sarah Gilbert lived on the other side of John.

In 1920 he and his wife and their daughter Orpha and son William lived on a farm in the same township--likely the same place, as his brother John lived nearby. William owned the house, mortgage free. He was a driller of oil wells.

In 1930 William and Mary, daughter Orpha, and sons James and William lived on a farm in Fairview Township--possibly the same place, although that is not known for sure. They owned the farm, which was valued at $1500, and they had a radio. William was a petroleum producer.

In 1940 William, Mary, Orpha, and James lived in a house on Chicora Road in Fairview Township. It was not a farm--but may still have been the same place they had been living all those years, with more houses being built and forests growing back. They owned the house, which was valued at $800.
