James Calvin Minteer was the third of four sons of Alexander Minteer. After Alexander froze to death in February of 1832, James was raised by his Uncle James, who also had a son named James. To avoid confusion, James Calvin was known as Cousin Jim.

"Married Rachel Hutchison. James was living with his Uncle Joseph in 1855 and Rachel was living with her cousin, Sarah. They fell in love and were married in March 1856, this making a double relationship in these families."
