Isabel (Isabella) Nicol McIntier-Austin was the second of eleven children born to William May Nicol II and Agnes Bronlee of Gilhead, Scotland.
She was born Sept. 1, 1801 in Gilhead Miel, Carluke, Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was christened Oct. 13, 1801 in the Presbyterian church in Carluke, Scotland. Isabella emigrated to Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY by 1820.
On August 12, 1822 when Isabel was one month shy of her 21st birthday she married Simeon McIntier b.Mar. 24, 1795, son of Amasa McIntier and Sarah Edwards. Husband, Simeon,died in Ap. 14, 1871. Isabella and Simeon had eight children. (William, Freeman, Solomon, James, Robert, David, Mary & Agnes)
It was in Hammond, NY when a group of LDS missionaries came to town that very few people converted to Mormonism, but Isabel and Simeon were ones who did after six of their children were born.(William, Freeman, Soloman, Agnes, James B. and Robert).
We find them in 1838 being baptized in the LSD church. In 1846 they were living in Bentensport, Iowa and in 1847 they were that the Winter Quarters in Harrison Co. Iowa. Between 1844-1847 Simeon left Isabel.This is documented in a letter written to David Nicol, Isabella's brother, after the Mormon party left the Harrison Co/Council Bluffs area. Eighth child, Mary, was born Nov. 1843 and died Nov. 30th at Nauvoo, Hancock Illinois.
There are conflicting stories about what happened to Simeon after the birth of their eighth child. One story is that he deserted Isabella and another is that he volunteered to fight in the Mexican-American War, but I have found no proof he ever fought in that war.
Thinking her first husband deserted her, on June 15, 1846, Isabella married William Austin,(1800 -1887). William was already firstly married to Isabella's sister, Agnes "Nancy" Nicol.
William and Agnes"Nancy" Nicol had no children of their own, but had taken in a young girl, Olive Lee, who William Austin married on 1 Jan 1828, Young, Ontario, Canada.
An excerpt of William's diary:
"I went to Harris Grove (Harrison County, Iowa) also and took piece of land and built a house and went to work to raise a crop. I stayed there until I made a raise to come to the valleys I left there in the spring of fifty two (1852) with two yoke of oxen six cows a good wagon and cart and a yoke of steers and a good fit out. We left our home the last of April (1852)and lay in camp some weeks before we started to travel. We were organized into fiftys then crossed the river and there we were prepared for the journey of eleven hundred and fifty miles across the plains. The Robert Wimmer Company was divided and I had charge of thirty five wagons . We traveled all that distance without going through a white settlement. There were a few Soldiers stationed at Fort Laramie, Wyoming about five hundred miles from the river also a few at Fort Bridger we saw plenty of Indians on the way it being an Indian Country. All the way we had to tie up the stalk night and stand guard all the way through we arrived in Salt Lake valley on the eight of October 1882"
Isabella died of Mountain fever near Echo Canyon, Summit County, Utah on Sept. 27, 1852 at the home of her son, Robert McIntier and is buried somewhere near Henefer, Echo Canyon, Utah .
