WILLIAM ⁵ MAY NICOL,III Paternal lineage: ( William⁴ May II, ,William ³ May I , William² Samuel, Hew¹ Nicol }

William May NICOL III maternal lineage: Agness Bronlee , Jannet Walker

WILLIAM ⁵ MAY NICOL,III (82 yrs 5 months and 2 days) (twin)b. May 22, 1803 Gillhead farm, Carluke, South Lanarkshire, Scotland was the fourth child of William May Nicol II (1779- 1850) and Agness Bronlee (1772-1855)(Scottish immigrants from the Lowlands). He and his twin sister, Agness "Nancy" Nicol 1803-1877) were born May 22, 1803 in Gillhead, Carluke, Lanarkshire Scotland. William III was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Hammond, NY.

When William was 16 yrs old, his family emigrated from Gillhead, Scotland to Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY around 1820.

By the age of seventeen, William operated a ferryboat between Canada and New York side of the St. Lawrence River. It was during a trip coming back from Canada that William first met his future bride, Margaret POLLOCK, daughter of John Pollock and Elizabeth Brown, as he operated the ferry boat on the St. Lawrence River. William saved Margaret Pollock (twelve yrs old at the time) from drowning after she fell overboard into the St. Lawrence River. Five years later they married and this resulted in a happy family of 12 children (six girls and six boys) all of whom were born in Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY. On April 29, 1825 in Hammond, St. Lawrence County, NY at the Hammond Presbyterian church. William May Nicol III married Margaret Pollock.

His twin sister, Agness, married William Austin at the same Presbyterian church, but when a group of Latter Day Saints came through Hammond, NY. Agness and William Austin left the Presbyterian church and converted to become Mormon and joined the Mormon's going on the historical trek to Utah. Agness and William Austin never had any biological children.

In 1861 William and Margaret and some of their children made the difficult journey by covered wagon from upstate New York by the St. Lawrence River to homestead and farm land in North East, Iowa. They settled outside of Stacyville, Mitchell county, Iowa. They lived there with the exception of 8 years (1869 - 1874) in which they lived and homesteaded in Dickinson County, Iowa and brought with them 3 of their children: Robert Bruce 39 yrs old, Clark Levi 22 yrs and Mattie Nicol 18 yrs old. Those 3 children lived and remained in Dickenson County, Iowa.

When 62 years of age, William Nicol united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he remained a consistent member till his death. Not demonstrative in his religion, he was, nevertheless a good man, and there can be no doubt of his having the confidence of his brethren in the church and community. He was, for the last eight months incapacitated, but until that time he was actively and intelligently interested in all matters social and religious. He was a good citizen, a valuable member of the community, and by men such as he, the early foundations of morality and good government were laid.
