Jeannette Nicol,(77) was born May 12, 1819, on board the immigrant ship Norris going from Scotland to St. Lawrence,NY the youngest of eleven children to William May Nicol II(1779- Oct 28 1850) and Agnes Bronlee(1772-1855)originally from Carluke, Scotland.

The Freeholder (newspaper), Cornwall, Canada, of March 11th, contains the following:
"An old and respected resident of Cornwall passed away on Saturday in the person of Mrs. Jas Guy Ross. The deceased lady, whose maiden name was Jeanette Nicol, was born May 12, 1819, and was consequently nearly 77 years old, Her father William May Nicol II, of Carluke, Scotland, came to this country in that year and settled in the neighborhood of Hammond, N.Y., about 40 miles from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. The passage across the ocean was more tedious at that time than now, as it took the Norris ( a sailing vessel) 3 weeks to cross. When they landed on the banks of Newfoundland on May 12, everything was covered in ice and the sailors had hard work to keep themselves warm. The trip up the St. Lawrence was made in Durham boats. Jeannette Nicol married the late Jas. Guy Ross in the year 1839, and was the mother of seven children, three of whom have since died. The surviving members of her family are Wm. Nicol Ross, Chicago, ILL., J. N. Ross and J. Ross, Boston, Mass. and Marion Ross of this town. Mrs. Ross was a resident of Cornwall, Canada for over 40 years.

The last of a generation gone. The last of a family of eleven - seven sons and four daughters. Deceased was the youngest daughter, and the writer's father was the oldest son, and all that is lovely and lovable in womankind he remembers as the attributes of his dear aunt Jeannette."
