Fred Silas Elwell
Fred Silas Elwell, 59, of 820 County St., a resident of Bennington since 1916, died suddenly Friday at Putnam Memorial Hospital. In frail health the last three years, his condition had been critical only a few hours.
Born in Shaftsbury Aug 15, 1897, he was the son of the late Silas and Martha Corey Elwell. His education had been received in Shaftsbury schools. In 1916 he moved to Bennington with his family and had been residing with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall R. Clark.
His employment had been at various knitting plants in Bennington, but for the longest period at the Allen-A Company. He later went to Arlington to work for the Hale Co. and did some farming in that area. Returning to Bennington his last employment was as a night watchman at the Vermont Soldiers Home. He had been faithful and conscientious in the performance of his duties and was held in high regard by both fellow employees and employers.
A lover of the outdoor life, he was fond of hunting and fishing and general sports which took him out-of-doors.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Jerome Pellerin of Rutland; three brothers, Clyde Elwell of Shaftsbury, Corwin of Bennington and John of Arlington; three sisters, Mrs. Lila Bronson of Shaftsbury, Mrs. Miner (Alice) Clark of Arlington and Mrs. Marshall (Josephine) Clark of Bennington; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services in charge of Walbridge Funeral Home will be held from his home at 810 County St. Monday at 11 am. Interment will be in the Elwell lot in South Shaftsbury. Friends may call at his home after 7 o'clock tonight and then at their convenience.
