ARLINGTON - Funeral services for John B. Elwell of Arlington, formerly of Bennington, who died Friday at Putnam Memorial Hospital at the age of 64, were held Sunday afternoon at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.
The Rev. H. Glenn Payne, First Baptist Church pastor in Bennington, officiated.
Bearers were James Bronson, Maurice Elwell, Ralph Bacon, Addison Clark, Corwin S. Elwell and the Rev. Gordon Clark. Entombment was in Park Lawn Chapel in Bennington.
Mr. Elwell for the past 10 years had been manager of the meat department at Clark's IGA Store in East Arlington. Prior to that, he was owner of Elwell's IGA Store at the corner of Safford and County Streets in Bennington and for several years previously had been meat supervisor at the Albany district of the A & P Company.
Born in Shaftsbury Oct 18, 1900, he was a son of Silas M. and Martha (Corey) Elwell. He had attended Bennington schools. He married the former Kathleen Healy of Bennington, who survives. He also leaves two sons, Capt. Robert H. Elwell of San Antonio, Texas, and Jon Bryan Elwell of Arlington; one daughter, Mrs. C. Bruce (Patricia) Graham of Manchester. Besides four grandchildren, he is also survived by a brother, Corwin of Bennington; three sisters, Mrs. Marshall Clark of Bennington, Mrs. Alice Clark of Arlington and Mrs. Charles Hewitt of Gil, Mass.
Friends and relatives called at the Arlington funeral home Saturday afternoon and evening and also at the Bennington funeral home before the service Sunday afternoon. Attending the service was a group from the Gradatim Society of the Bennington First Baptist Church.
Relatives and friends attended from Philadelphia, Pa.; Schenectady, Johnsonville and Cohoes, N.Y.; Lincoln, Maine; Brattleboro, Poultney and Ludlow; Cranfield, N.J.; Williamstown, Mass., and this general area.
