CORWIN C. ELWELL
Corwin C. Elwell, 80, of 246 Bradford St., Bennington, retired building contractor and well-known local fiddler, died Monday at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
A native of Shaftsbury, he was born Feb 2, 1895 to Silas and Martha (Corey) Elwell, received his education in the Bennington schools and was an Army Veteran of World War I. He was employed as a building contractor and later as a house painter and decorator.
He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and was a member of the Mt. Anthony chapter, F&AM. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington.
He belonged to the Northeastern Fiddlers Association, participated in numerous fiddling contests in Vermont and neighboring states, and after his retirement often entertained nursing home residents with old time tunes.
In addition to his widow, the former Flavilla Bahan of Bennington, whom he married in 1921; he leaves three sons, Donald of Suffern, N.Y., Corwin C. Jr., the Brattleboro town manager, and Richard Elwell, also of Brattleboro; two daughters, Mrs. Ralph Bacon of Cohoes, N.Y. and Mrs. Nancy Kim of Bennington; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Alice Clark of East Arlington; nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be held at 10 am Wednesday at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in the White Chapel Cemetery, Bennington.
Friends may pay respects at the funeral home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Heart Fund.
