MRS. MARTHA E. ELWELL
Native of Shaftsbury Resident of Bennington Since 1916
Friends and relatives of Mrs. Martha E. Elwell of 810 County street were shocked and saddened Friday morning by her sudden death. Although she had been in frail health for some time her death was unexpected. Mrs. Elwell was born in Shaftsbury May 29, 1871, and was the daughter of Charles Corey and Sophia Stone Corey. In November, 1888, she married Silas M. Elwell, who died in the year 1901.
The greater part of her life was lived in Shaftsbury, but in the year 1916 she moved with her family to Bennington to her late home on County street. Old friends and neighbors still speak of the remarkable courage and fortitude of this mother who was left at the age of thirty with nine small children.
Her life was one of Christian service not only to her own children, but she was a loving mother to a niece and grandson who were left motherless in infancy. Her service was not limited to her family for until ill health prevented she was never too busy to extend a helping hand to others.
She is survived by five sons and three daughters, who are Clyde A. Elwell and Mrs. Lila Bronson of South Shaftsbury, Raymond S. Elwell and Mrs. Alice Clark of East Arlington, Corwin, Fred and Josephine Elwell of Bennington, and John of Schenectady, and also a foster daughter, Mrs. Jennie Hewitt of Millers Falls, Mass. A daughter, Mrs. Gladys Moore, died in 1928. She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, one of whom is Maurice S. Elwell, who has always made his home with her. A sister, Mrs. Myron Cole, of East Arlington, and a brother, Fred S. Corey of South Shaftsbury, also survive.
The funeral services will be held from her late home Sunday at 2 p.m. the Rev. W.G. Towart officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at South Shaftsbury.

One precious to our hearts has gone.
The voice we loved is stilled.
The place made vacant in our home
Can never more be filled.
Our Father in His wisdom called
The boon his love had given;
And though on earth the body lies.
The soul is safe in heaven.
