James M. McNeil (also McNeel) was born in New Haven, Olmsted County, Minnesota (this per census reports of where his parents resided at the time). One source states Jimstown.

The date of 1872 is correctly reflected on his marker and in his obituary. He lived 75 years, 1 Month and 15 Days.

He was brother to the following siblings:

Adeline Julia
Mable
Charles F.

He met his soon to be wife, Jessie Rose (Craig), in Portland Oregon, where they were married in her mother's parlor, (June 5, 1901). Shortly after this, the McNeil's moved south to the lower Willamette Valley area of southern Lane County where they started their family. James was father to the following children:

Brinton Wallace McNeil (eldest)
Elsie McNeil
Lilly McNeil (Lillie) (Reece) (Lane)
James McNeil (Jamie)
Winnie Clare (Clair) McNeil (No Census Record)
Clyde W. McNeil
Hubert B. McNeil
Agnes V. McNeil (Quillen)

The McNeil's farmed in several locations of the lush fertile rural country adjoining Eugene, living in the Goshen-West Moreland areas. James McNeil was also thought to be a logger as was the predominate family occupation.

Tragedy came to the McNeil family in 1931 when Mrs. McNeil (Jessie) passed away from a sudden illness. This event was heartbreaking for the family, but especially so for James, as Jessie was only 48.

Mr. McNeil continued to live in the Lane County for about 16 more years before he was to pass away and join his wife Jessie in the hereafter. At one point, in 1940, he was residing with his son Hubert at Latham, south of Cottage Grove. James passed away at a local hospital.
