Frank Wohnoutka was born on 29 January 1904, on the family farm which was south of Bechyn, in Beaver Falls Township, Renville County, Minnesota, to Frank and Antonia Sembauer Wohnoutka. He received his education at the District 7 School in Beaver Falls.

Prior to his marriage, Frank did carpentry work and farm labor in Minnesota. Each fall, he would travel to North Dakota, primarily to the Wing area, to help the farmers with their threshing.

On 14 September 1938, Frank married Theresa Novy, the daughter of James and Mary Marik Novy. They originally met on one of Theresa’s trips to Minnesota to visit her relatives. After their marriage, Frank and Theresa rented, and later purchased, the James Novy farm which was located near Wing. Frank and Theresa raised their three children and farmed at Wing, until they moved to Bismarck in 1961.

Frank was a man of few words who had a kind heart and a great sense of humor. He led a prayerful life and was a wonderful and loving individual who was deeply devoted to his family. He loved to fish, play cards, and work in the garden. As with many farmers, he was an inventor. Although he never sold any of his ideas or obtained any patents for his inventions, Frank was able to make a specialized tool or part whenever he needed one. After his wife was no longer able to raise a garden, he happily took over the duties of planting and harvesting a huge garden.

Sadly, Frank’s wife, Theresa, died at the age of 81, on 13 September 1992, in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota.

On 29 January 1997, Frank reached the age of 93. Unfortunately, a couple of months later, the pain from his arthritis and bone deterioration significantly increased, and he was forced to receive help from family members and medical professionals. He developed respiratory issues, which led to hospitalization, and subsequent heart failure. His body just wore out; but, his mind was still very sharp and he still had his sense of humor..

At about 5:15 p.m., on Friday, 29 August 1997, at the age of 93, Frank J. Wohnoutka died in St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota. After five years of separation, he joined his wife, Theresa.

Frank was survived by his daughter, Kathryn (Lee) Richter; two sons, George (Kathy) Wohnoutka of Houston, Texas, and Paul (Lorna) Wohnoutka of Bismarck; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren, three great-granddaughters; two step-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Joe (Marie) Wohnoutka and Bill (Helena) Wohnoutka, all of Olivia, Minnesota, Edward (Lillian) of Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and George (Gertrude) Wohnoutka of Watsonville, California; two sisters, Cecilia Wlock of Placentia, California, and Lillian (Joe) Fisher of Mission Viejo, California; and sister-in-law, Gladys Wohnoutka of Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Theresa; sister, Mary Chan; and two brothers, Mike and Emil Wohnoutka.

Visitation was held at 7:00 p.m. at the Boelter Funeral Home in Bismarck, on Monday, 1 September 1997. A rosary recital followed the prayer service.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 2 September 1997, from the Church of Saint Mary, in Bismarck. Casket Bearers were Richard, Myron, and Bonnie Richter; Colleen Braun; Steve, Mike, and Nancy Wohnoutka; and Crystal Aguillon.

Frank was buried beside his wife, in Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota, on 2 September 1997.
