In 1941, Mike left for California where he planned to live with his brother, George, and attend the Eaglewood Aircraft School. Before he left, he and his fiancée, Ione Jansen, had made plans to marry.
Mike never made it to California. He was killed in a car accident on 22 October 1941, near Grants, Cibola County, New Mexico. The vehicle he was driving collided with a fruit truck. Mike was thrown from the vehicle and run over by the truck. It is believed that he died instantly.
It was 2012 before Mike's family discovered that Mike and Ione were expecting a child at the time of Mike's death. When the baby girl, Joan Marie, was born, Ione put her up for adoption. Ione later married Lloyd Lightfoot from Olivia, Minnesota. Years later, Joan's adoptive mother provided her with the information to locate her birth mother. Joan Marie has since been united with the Lightfoot and Wohnoutka families.
The remains of Miloyd M. "Mike" Wohnoutka were returned to his parents in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. Mike's brother, George, accompanied Mike's casket on the train ride to Redwood Falls, where they were met by family members.
He was buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bechyn, Renville County, Minnesota.
