Services for Kathleen Caroline Cherland Sohn, age 89 of Blue Earth, were Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery at Blue Earth. Mrs. Sohn died Thursday, Dec. 7 at the United Hospital in Blue Earth.
Kathleen was born June 4, 1911 in Pilot Grove Township, Faribault County, the daughter of Carl and Katie (Halligan) Cherland. She graduated from Blue Earth High School in 1928 and Normal Teacher Training at Blue Earth. She taught in rural schools in Mapleton and Pilot Grove for four years.
She married Alfred Harry Sohn on December 20, 1932. He preceded her in death in 1952 from a traffic accident. She resumed college classes and graduated from Mankato State, with a Bachelor of Science degree in upper elementary education. She taught sixth grade for 21 years in Blue Earth Public Schools, retiring in 1976. She was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid, taught Sunday school for 25 years, co-chaired the first boutique at Trinity, and was a member of Elizabeth Circle. She had also served as a 4-H leader, extension leader, PTA secretary and was a member of Mitchell Chautauqua and Faribault County Historical Society.
Survivors include three sons: Duane and his wife Janice of Blue Earth, Darrell and his wife Dorothy of Plymouth, David and his wife Priscilla of Long Lake; one daughter, Diane Hoffstedt and her husband Carl of Golden Valley; thirteen grandchildren; one sister, Alvina Kallestad of Park Rapids; one brother, Richard Cherland of Banning, CA. She was also preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers, and two grandchildren.
