William (Willie) Melton West, 88, of 345 Locust St, Galesburg, Ill., died Tuesday, January 26, 1977, at 5:34 pm at St. Mary's Hospital. He was born on November 1, 1888, in Houston, Missouri, and married Minnie Hurt on July 9, 1916, in Bennett, Missouri, she died June 6, 1960.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Lester (Mildred) Davis of Alexis, Mrs. William (Virginia) Smith of Eagle Creek, Oregon, and Mrs. John (Irene) Wells of Galesburg. Six sons, James (Blanche)of Astoria, Oregon, Chester of Galesburg, Charles (Marilyn) of Omaha, Nebraska, Edward (Betty), George (Roberta), and Gene (Carol) all of Abingdon, Ill., 45 grandchildren, 69 great-grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Two brothers, Arvel West of Briar, Missouri, and Delmer of Little Rock, Arkansas, and one sister Estella Crowles of Little Rock, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, one son, and three brothers.

Mr. West was a retired farmer and timber worker. He moved to Abingdon in 1942 from Alton, Missouri then to Galesburg in 1972.

Pallbearers are Bill White, Larry Trial, Dave Lapp, Cliff Palinski, Phillip Scott, and Charles Reynolds.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 pm at Larson Funeral Home in Abingdon where friends may call Thursday evening. The Reverend Vernon Self, pastor of First General Baptist Church will officiate, Burial will be in the Abingdon Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the family said.
