John F, Astle Dies At Logan Home
John Francis Astle, 82, passed away at his home in Logan, Utah of a cerebral hemorrhage Wednesday morning November 7, 1951. Even though his health hasn't been of the best for the past two or three years, he was active and well for his age, until about a week preceding his death.
John Francis Astle was born September 21, 1869 at Montpelier Idaho. He was the oldest son of John Astle and Isabel Jane Bradshaw. He came to Star Valley with his parents in 1887. They soon settled at Grover and are listed as some of the earliest pioneers of that community. He was married to Lauretta Hepworth, September 9, 1891 in the Logan temple and to this union were born 13 children. Soon after his marriage he was called on a mission in 1894 to the Southern states where he served for 31 months. He was the first missionary called from the Grover ward. since that time he has served his church on two other missions, going to the Eastern States in 1909 and serving in Texas in 1925.
The family first lived south of grover, but later purchased the large ranch north of Grover where Gilbert Anderson now resides. The family lived in Grover and operated the ranch from there for a time, but later constructed a fine home in 1916 and lived at the ranch.
His wife and also his son, Vernon died during the flu epidemic in 1918. He and his family moved to Providence, Utah in 1920. He married Clara Holm Steen March 30, 1927 in the Logan Temple.
He was an ardent church worker and in addition to his missionary labors, worked continually. He labored in the Sunday School Superintendency for 11 years. As a High Priest he served in the Grover Ward Bishopric, acting as a counselor to Bp. Thurman for eight years. He assisted materially with the building of the present ward chapel, and was keenly interested in it and just recently presented the ward with a lovely painting. He took a prominent part in civic and community affairs and served as Justice of the Peace several terms. After moving to Providence he filled two Stake Missions, and in later years spent much time doing temple work.
