Mabel Viola Sloan, age 88, of Tuscumbia formerly of Iberia, passed away Wednesday, June 30, 2010, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tuscumbia. She was born in Argyle on March 2, 1922, daughter of the late Elmer and May (Sloan) Rowden. On October 12, 1940, near St. Anthony, Mabel married Edgar Eldo Sloan, who preceded her in death on February 22, 1979.

She worked several years for LB manufacturing Company and the Meta Coat Factory. In later years she worked as home help for the elderly or infirmed. She loved helping people in any way she could. She enjoyed doing quilting, embroidering, sewing, and general homemaking. Having her friends and family come for a meal was a real treat for her and them. She was known for taking meals to the sick and elderly. She taught Sunday school for over 30 years, rarely missing a Sunday. Mabel was a founding member of the Faith Tabernacle Church and recently attended the Light House Worship Center Church.

She is survived by three sons, William (Bill) Sloan and wife Anna of Freeburg, Larry Sloan and wife Orvene of Crocker, and Donald Sloan and wife Elaine of St. Thomas; two daughters, Lois Prater and husband Jack of Iberia and Janice Hedges and husband Ronnie of Fulton; one son-in-law, William Maylee of Holts Summit; one brother, Curtis Rowden and wife Evelyn of Hannah City, Illinois; one sister, Lorean Workman Rowden and husband Richard of Waynesville; one sister-in-law, Louella Rowden of Iberia; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, Nora Ann Maylee; four brothers, Virgil Rowden, Herbert Rowden, Carl Rowden, and Norman Rowden; three sisters, Mattie Blankenship, Eilene Humphrey, and Marie Ahart; two infant brothers; and one infant sister.

Services will be at ll:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at Faith Tabernacle Church near Iberia. Bro. Lloyd Mattocks will officiate. Interment will be in Jim Matt Lawson Cemetery near Iberia.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, July 2, at the church. Memorial contributions are suggested to Jim Matt Lawson Cemetery.
