On the 1920 census for Black Mountain she is in the home of her grandparents, William and Nancy Roland, with her aunts Bessie, Bonnie, and Cleet ( Cleo ). She is listed as Lolah Angle, age 5, granddaughter.
Her father and her brothers, Homer and Howard, are boarders in the home of Chloyd Hensley and his family in Burnsville, Yancey NC in 1920. Her father is listed as widowed. Even though I can't find a 1920 census for her mother, she is still alive.
Her sister, Dema, born in 1913, is in the home of Stokely Haney and his family in the French Broad section of Buncombe County in 1920, listed as Demmie Angel, age 6, companion.
In 1930, Lelia is still with her grandparents, but now in Old Fort, McDowell NC, along with her cousins Edward and William Burnett, sons of her aunt Cleo. She is listed as Lena Roland, age 15, granddaughter.
In 1930 her dad is in Burnsville with his new wife, Lina Parris, who he married on 30 Mar 1920. She brings two daughters from her first marriage to William Handy Cox. He marries Mollie West in 1914. She also has two sons, John and Ralph, born between 1915 and 1920, but Willard is always listed as their father. Lelia's two brothers are still with their dad.
Dema is still with the Haney family in French Broad, now listed as Demie Haney, age 16, adopted daughter.
In 1928, with the name Bertha Ira Lee Roland, her mother marries Garland Franklin Padgett.
In 1940, there is a census listing in Burnsville for the household of Harriet Wilson, 67, widow. Lena Angel, 22 is listed with her as a lodger. Her aunt Bonnie's mother-in-law had the name Harriet Wilson, but I don't know if this is her, or if it is Lelia. Dema is married and with her family, her dad is still with Lina Parris, and her mom is still with Mr. Padgett.
All four of Lina's children from before her marriage to Willard went by the name Angel for the rest of their lives after 1920.
The way I am sure that Mrs. Padgett is her mother is that she, Dema, and Homer are listed as her surviving children in her obituary. Howard had already passed.
Apparently she married Walter Stanley Rupert 2 Oct 1948 in Dona Ana, New Mexico with the name Linda Angel. The most puzzling thing about that is that she is referred to as Miss Lena Angel of Leicester, NC, in her father's 1960 obituary. She is referred to as Mrs. Linda Rupert, Old Fort NC in her mother's 1970 obituary ( not mentioned in her step-mother's obituary ), Linda Ruppert, McDowell County, NC in her brother Homer's 1994 obituary, Lena Ruppert in her sister Bertha's 19 Aug 1999 obituary, and in her sister Wilma's 2011 obituary.
