"Tribute of Respect
Obituary

"J. L. Bonner died at his home in Freestone County, August 24, 1905 being in his seventy-fifth year. Mr. Bonner had long been an honored and respected citizen of this county, having moved to the county in 1854. He was one of the oldest veterans that served in the Civil War, and was always a patriotic citizen -ever foremost in good word and work.

He was twice married. His first marriage was to Miss S. E. Bonner in 1850. Of this marriage three sons survive to mourn his loss. In 1887 he was married to Miss E. B. Robinson, who with her two little boys mourn the loss of a loving husband and indulgent father.

The writer has been very intimately acquainted with Mr. Bonner since 1875, and never knew a nobler man or more faithful friend. We do honor to ourselves, in honoring the memory of such citizens. Yet, better than all, he was an humble Christian, and we hope to meet him
in a better country.

"Death of Mr. J. L. Bonner

Mr. J. L. Bonner died at his home, Freestone County, Texas August 24, 1905. The deceased was born in Alabama, Feb 11, 1831. At the age of nineteen he united with the A. R. P. Church under Dr. Miller, to which he ever was loyal even unto death.

Mr. Bonner was first married to Miss S. E. Bonner in Alabama in 1850. He removed to Texas in 1859. He went when his country called in 1861 and served to the end of the war. In 1868 his first wife died leaving him a family of four little boys to raise. In 1881 he married the second time to Miss E. B. Robinson who with two little boys is left to mourn the loss of a loving husband and indulgent father.

The writer has been very intimately acquainted with the deceased since 1875. A nobler man and a more faithful friend I never knew. He was a man of decided convictions; once convinced of a duty, he did not confer with flesh and blood.

His home was his preacher's home as long as he wished to stay. He was ordained an elder when Harmony Church was organized and he died an elder of Harmony although at one time he served as an elder in the Corsicana church which was organized in his home.

We sorrow not, as those who have no hope. Blessed are the dead that lie in the Lord.

W. L. P. " [Reverend William Little Patterson, pastor of Harmony A. R. P. church in Freestone County, Texas]

"The foregoing obituary of Mr. John L. Bonner is republished from the Associate Presbyterian, because of the many friends and relatives of the deceased who live in Wilcox County. Mr. Bonner was for a long time a resident of our county, living in prairies near Darlington. His first wife was a sister of Dr. Jos. H. Bonner [Dr. Joseph Hearst Bonner]. Mr. Bonner was a highly esteemed and public-spirited citizen, and a loyal member of A. R. P. Church, and he will long be pleasantly remembered by all who knew him." "
