Alexander Miller was the eldest of fifteen children born at Ryegate to John and Margaret (Dunsyre) Miller. He married Mary Mackie in Newbury VT 7 March 1833. He settled and cleared a farm there, and in 1848 the farm was sold. On 8 March 1848 William Halley sold to Miller a lot in Rockton near the Methodist church, but during the following May he sold it. On 2 February 1855 the family transferred their church membership to the Old North Church and moved to a farm near there. The church was having problems with Alex as early as January 1857. He maintained that the church elders looked down on him because he was poor and had so many children, claiming that "he loved the church, but the church didn't love him." The records also indicate that he was the only member of his family who felt that way. By 19 March 1859 Alex was dropped from the church membership. He was physically active up to the time of his death.
