At the age of 22, Roger married Anna Kilburn at Shirland, Winnebago, Illinois. Soon after, they moved north to Clinton, Rock, Wisconsin to farm.
By 1880, Roger had moved the family to western Kansas to farm, and by the 1895 Kansas Census they were living close to Hays where all of the children, except Edna, were still living at home—even Charles Jay, who was almost 30 years old.
The 1900 census indicates that Roger is absent, and Anna is living with her married daughter Anna in Hays City. All subsequent census records for Anna indicate a marriage status of "widow", therefore it is likely that a divorce occured. Roger is found in Michigan, married to a Margaret on the 1910 census. This Margaret is Leslie Margaret Webster Mackie, Roger's first cousin. Roger has not been found in the 1920 census, but the obituaries of his siblings indicate that between 1900 and 1923, he resided in Michigan and Wisconsin.
It should be mentioned that Roger and his second wife, Margaret, must have divorced, or separated, because he returned to Salina, Kansas around 1923, which is 2 years before Margaret passed away in Wisconsin. Roger passed away in Salina in 1926.
