Melvin Alonzo Greear was the first of six sons born to Alonzo Pierce (Lon or L.P.) and Signa Hannah (Osterman) Greear. He was born in South Dakota and lived there until 1924 when his parents moved to Edwardsville, Illinois.

Melvin attended local schools and then worked a variety of jobs including a laborer in a radiator shop, drilling oil wells, owning a blacksmith and welding shop, farming, and a road maintenance worker for Jarvis Township in Troy, Illinois.

Melvin and Clara Sophie Suhre were married on Easter Sunday in April 1936. They were the parents of four children: Melvin Rudolph Alonzo, Robert Lee, LaVerne Beverly and Betty Ann Greear. They later divorced. Clara Greear died in 1991.

In April 1970 Melvin and Frances (Uhring) Williman were married in Troy, Illinois. They resided on a small farm there. Melvin and Frances adopted and raised Brenda Lee Greear.

He became involved in making handcrafted wooden items which included bowls, rolling pins, lazy susans, etc. using many different types of wood on some items.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers: Donald Wilke, Kenneth Nels, Emmett Clarence, Leo Milton and Carl Alfred Greear, his wife Frances and his son Melvin (Buddy) Greear.
