In 1879 he and his family left Germany for America, departing at Bremen and arriving aboard the SS Main at New York City on July 12, 1879. The family making the trip were his parents and his older siblings Wilhelm, Anna, and Heinrich.
They settled in Gage County, Nebraska, and were enumerated in the Nebraska 1885 census living in Grant Precinct in Gage County. Those enumerated in this census were Carl, his parents, and his brother Henry (Heinrich).
On May 16, 1895 Carl (the First Trinity Church records have his name as "Karl") married Anna Charlotta Bartels, daughter of Christ and Catherine (Lages) Bartels, and settled near her parents in Blakely Precinct in Gage County, Nebraska. They had four children: Emilie, Herman, Martin, and Albert. Their marriage was cut tragically short when Charlotta died a week after their last baby was born.
A few months later, Carl married Charlotta's only surviving sister, Anna Elizabeth. Carl took his family and they, together with what remained of the Bartels family (Charlotta and Anna's father, Christ and his second wife, Louise nee Tiemann--relationship, if any, unknown) left this place where there was so many tragic early deaths, looking for a fresh start in Kay County, Oklahoma.
The early deaths did not stop entirely. Carl's son, Herman, died in 1908. Carl and Anna had three children: Ida, Emma, and Carl; their firstborn also died before her second birthday. But the remaining 5 of Carl's children did all grow to adulthood, marry, and had children.
Carl died at the age of 67; his second wife outlived him by almost 20 years.
