Herman was the second of the four children born to Carl and Anna Charlotta (Bartels) Tiemann, on their farm in Gage County, Nebraska. He was baptized at the First Trinity Lutheran Church on November 28, 1897. His mother died when he was four, and his father married his aunt Anna Elizabeth, sister to his mother. They moved from Oklahoma to Nebraska around 1902, and Herman died a few years later.
