Charlotta was the 3rd of the seven daughters born to Christ and Katherine (Lages) Bartels, on their farm in Blakely precinct, Gage County, Nebraska. Only she and sister Anna Elizabeth lived to adulthood.

Charlotta married Karl Tiemann at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Gage County, Nebraska on May 16, 1895. They were the parents of four children: Emilie (b. 12 Jul 1896), Herman (b. 13 Nov 1897), Martin (b. 26 May 1899) and Albert (b. 5 Feb. 1901). Charlotta died one week after her last child was born.

Following her death, her husband, Karl, married Charlotta's sister, Anna Elizabeth, and they had three children.
