MRS. LUCY C. O'BRIEN
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov 14 at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Stanton for Mrs. Lucy C. O'Brien, 65, of Stanton, who died Nov. 12 in an Omaha hospital of cancer, following a brief illness.
Father Edward Gill officiated at the sevice with Mrs. Bud Chleboun providing the organ music. Burial was in the Stanton cemetery, under the direction of the Shultz-Vogel Mortuary.
Pallbearers were John McCarthy and Tim McCarthy of Norfolk, Jerry Scheer of Madison, Mark Sehi of Neligh, Jim Rucnick of Tilden and Gerald McCarthy of Fremont, all nephews of Mrs. O'Brien. Honorary pallbearers were Shane and Joe O'Brien of Norfolk, Barry, Brien, Shad and Bart Wolff of Madison, T.J. Van Dieken of Orlando, Fla., and Jamie McCarvelle of Stanton, all are grandsons and a great-grandson of Mrs. O'Brien.
Mrs. Lucy C. O'Brien was born May 1, 1913 in Tilden to Justin McCarthy and Margaret Heenan McCarthy. She was raised in the Tilden community and graduated from Tilden High School in 1932.
On Nov. 9, 1935 she was married to Alva O'Brien at Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Tilden. Five children were born to this union. The O'Brien family moved to Stanton in 1947 where they owned and operated the O'Brien Sand and Gravel Company until his death in 1968. Mrs. O'Brien continued the sand and gravel business until 1972, and during that time the (AGC) Associated General Contractors of America appointed her a member of the Aggregate Producers Committee. She was recognized by her female management role in a contracting business.
Survivors include five children, Mrs. Rita VanDieken of Orlando, Fla.; Joe O'Brien of Norfolk,; Mrs. Jim (Mary) Schultz of Hartington; Mrs. Gary (Bette) Wolff of Madison; and Miss Maureen O'Brien of Phoenix, Ariz. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren and one great grand son; five sisters, Mrs. Wilbur (Ann) James and Mrs. Lyle (Theresa) Scheer, both of Norfolk, Mrs. Marg Funk of Clearwater, Mrs. Marc LaVelle of Worthington, Minn. and Mrs. Elizabeth Velder of Clarks and one brother, John McCarthy of Norfolk.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, one sister and her husband, who died Nov. 29 1968.
