Mannie Leonard Estes , son of Mannie Evan Estes and Selma Frances Estes , was born January 27 , 1927 in Lee County , Mississippi . His paternal grandparents were Elisha Evans Estes and Sarah Caroline McCarty Estes , and his maternal grandparents were John Houston Shumpert and Rothsura Dora McKinney Shumpert . During World War II Leonard served in the Navy aboard a submarine in the Phillipines . On April 12, 1947 he married Erma Fowler and they had two children - James and Susan . He had a variety of careers working as a well driller , a truck driver for L.P McCarty Co. , and as an employee of Krueger Metal . Leonard was a member of Belden Baptist Church . He died in the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Union County on April 18, 2001 survived by his wife Erma Estes ; son James Estes ( Larisa ) and daughter Susan Estes Lewis (Ricky) ; his sisters - Foy Basden , Ellen Stroupe , Lucille Allen , Mae Ruth , and Marie Jones ; his brothers - Mannie Estes , Ernest Estes , and John Thomas Estes ; and 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren .
