Robert Lester Martin was the middle child of eleven children born to Rev. William Denton Martin and Patience Effie Ann Ingle Martin in rural Marion County, AL where his father farmed and was a Baptist Minister. He had 7 brothers and 3 sisters.

He always went by his middle name Lester. He married Stella Phillips on May 24, 1936 in Hamiton, Marion County, AL. They were married 60 years before her death. They had one son, "Junior" and one daughter, Martha.

He worked at John T. Weeks Coal Mine in Rock City, AL for several years in the 1940's. In May 1951, Lester moved his family to Moline, IL. There he worked for Farmall, Rock Island Mill Works, and finally for the Rock Island Lines Railroad where he retired in 1974 after 18 years.

Lester and his wife Stella moved back to Marion County, AL in the late 1970's for seven years and again returned to the Quad-Cities, Illinois residing in Carbon Cliff, Illinois.

He died at Illini Hospital in Silvis, Illinois. His wife preceded him in death. Lester's funeral on June 7, 1997, was on the first anniversary of his wife's heart stopping, and the day he lost her.

Dad was a good hearted man. He was always willing to help or share what he had. He never knew a stranger.
