Fred J. Hartley, 67, 35 Briar Road, widely-known businessman and pioneer in automobile transportation in Muncie, died at Ball Hospital early Friday morning following a short illness. He was the owner and operator of the Hartley Wrecking Co., 600 W. 23rd St., since 1923. He has also been associated with several other enterprises. He and a brother, Roy, started the first city bus line here, known as Hartleys' Jitney Bus, serving the Normal City area. The brothers also started the first automobile taxi service in Muncie. A native of Oakville, Hartley moved to Muncie with his parents, Harley and Bertha (Johnson) Hartley, when he was seven years old. He was a 1912 graduate of Muncie High School. A member of the Hazelwood Christian Church, he had also served as a deacon and trustee there.

He is survived by his wife, Leah Jerome; a daughter, Mrs. Talbot (Betty) Merrill, Muncie; two sons, Frederick, Whittier, Calif.; and David, Wood Ridge, N.J.; two sisters, Mrs. Holly B. Harvey, Muncie, and Mrs. Eugene Nutting, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; three brothers, Joseph, Indianapolis, and J. Ross and Phillip D., both of Muncie, and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Hazelwood Christian Church, Rev. Robert G. Sulanke, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elm Ridge Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Friends may call at the Meeks Mortuary after noon Saturday and until 2 p.m. Sunday. The casket will not be opened at the church.
