Joseph W. Hartley, 60, a member of a prominent Muncie family, died at his home at Indianapolis Saturday afternoon. He was a son of the late Harley Hartley, who operated a foundry in Muncie many years, and the late Bertha Johnson Hartley. The foundry later became Eagle Oil Co., the predecessors firm of Hartley Oil Co. A graduate of Central High School, he earned a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Xi fraternity. He went to Indianapolis in 1926 and joined the J. D. Adams Co., builders of road construction machinery. He later became a member of of the board of directors of the firm. In 1948, he joined Mouldings Division of Thompson Industries where he was plant manager and a member of the firm's board of directors. In 1956, he became plant manager of Insley Manufacturing Co. at Indianapolis. He was a member of the Center Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and Northwood Christian Church, all at Indianapolis.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Northwood Christian Church. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Friends may call at Shirley Brothers Irving Hill Chapel at Indianapolis. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Mrs. Rufus B. Jones Jr., Worthington, Ohio, and Mrs. William O'Laughlin, Indianapolis; a son, Joseph W. Hartley Jr., Maui, Hawaii; 14 grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Holly B. Harvey, Muncie, and Mrs. Eugene Nutting, Lewiston, N.Y.; and two brothers, J. Ross and Phillip B. Hartley, both of Muncie.
