Mrs. Edith Hartley Nutting, a former resident of Niagara Falls died Saturday, August 15, 1970 at Southwest General Hospital, Berea, Ohio. She had been a resident of Niagara Falls for more than 50 years. She was the widow of Eugene Galliher Nutting, who died May 26, 1970. Mr. Nutting had been associated with The Carborundum Co. for many years until his retirement in 1956.

A native of Muncie, Ind., Mrs. Nutting attended Terre Haute Normal School and then served as an elementary teacher for four years. Edith married Eugene Nutting, June 30, 1915, Delaware Co., and moved to Niagara Falls. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Memorial Hospital Women's Auxiliary and the Tatler, of which she had been a president. She served on the board of directors of the YWCA and during World War II, worked as a Red Cross Grey Lady. She is survived by two sons, Eugene Nutting Jr. of Grosse Ile, Mich.; and Hartley Nutting of Waterville, Maine; a daughter, Mrs. Nelson (Joyce) F. Graves of Berea, Ohio, and eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. Private memorial services will be held in the chapel of the United Methodist Church, Berea.

Note: Bertha Johnson Hartley's notes gave the source of the name of each of her ten children. Her second daughter, Edith Emmer, was named for the doctor/midwife? "Emmer" who delivered Edith.

Interesting details of the burials for Edith and Eugene follow: Edith had decided she wanted to be buried in Berea in a traditional casket, and chose Woodvale Cemetery, Middleburg Heights, OH. Eugene had decided he wanted to be cremated and half of his ashes buried in the Nutting family plot in Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, IN. and the other half placed in Edith's casket. Eugene died first and his cremains were divided with half going to Muncie, but they weren't accepted until a death certificate was provided. Then a headstone was installed at Beech Grove in Muncie.

Edith died about three months later. Family asked that a package be placed in Edith's coffin. A headstone was ordered with both their names/dates on it. When it was received, the cemetery called to say there had been an error since one plot was for one person and the stone had two names/dates. Family paid for another plot so both could RIP. Therefore, Eugene has TWO headstones.
Information was provided by their daughter.

NOTE: Eugene Galliher Nutting, 1891-1970, also has a headstone at Beech Grove Cemetery, Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. Find a Grave Memorial #82993435
