Mrs. Bertha Johnson Hartley, 71, widely known Muncie resident, died Thursday at 10:40 p.m. at her home, 111 N. Liberty St. She had been ill several years. Mrs. Hartley, widow of Harley D. Hartley, was born in Delaware County. She was a member of the Jackson Street Christian Church and the Muncie Woman's Club. She was the daughter of Turner H. and Maria Helsinger (Holsinger?) Johnson. Harley D. Hartley was the founder of the Eagle Foundry in Muncie and was one of the city's most widely known citizens. He later founded the Eagle Coal Company which is still operated by his sons under the name of the Hartley Coal Company.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Holly Harvey, Muncie, and Mrs. Eugene Nutting, Niagara Falls, N. Y.; five sons, Roy Hartley of Minneapolis, Joseph Hartley of Indianapolis, Fred J. Hartley, J. Ross Hartley and Phillip D. Hartley all of Muncie; three brothers, Harry Johnson, Niagara Falls, N. Y., Charles Johnson of Jonesboro and L. H. Johnson, Indianapolis; three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Cray of Monticello, Mrs. J. A. Moore, Richmond and Mrs. Curtis Nixon of Cowan; 14 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. The funeral will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Meeks mortuary. The Reverend Edgar Faye Daugherty will officiate. Burial will be in Beech Grove Cemetery near Oakville. Friends may call at the residence after 7 p.m. Friday.
