Benjamin Franklin Bates was born in 1819 in New York to Mary Crouch and her husband Charles Bates. In 1826, at about age 7, Benjamin moved with his family to Hiram, Portage, Ohio.

In 1842, Benjamin's parents and some of his sibs moved by wagon train to Iowa. It's likely that Benjamin went west before they did because in 1842 he married Violenta Ray in Clay County, Missouri. A few years later there are records showing that Benjamin was active in his community in Monroe, Iowa, and he was living next door to his sister, Amanda, and her family

In 1856, Benjamin, a wheelwright , had 4 children and lived next door to his sister Dorliska and her family. In 1860 Benjamin's 71 year old father, Charles, is living with him and his family. Charles had been a widower since his wife (Benjamin's mother) Mary died on the wagon train trip from Ohio to Iowa.

Later Benjamin is listed as a chairmaker, carpenter, and farmer. During the Civil War, he served in the militia with at least one of his brothers. Benjamin outlived his wife by 3 years.
