Charles Bates was born to Sarah Colvin and William Bates, probably in Windham, CT,. His younger brothers were Waterman, William Riley, Samuel, Louden Arnold, and Sheldon. When Charles was young, he most likely moved to Otsego, New York with his family.

At age 20, Charles married Mary Crouch of German Flats, Herkimer, New York. In 1814 Charles enlisted in the military at Sackett's Harbor, New York, serving as clerk under Captain Nicolas Schumacker for 4 months.

In about 1820, with 5 or so children in tow, Charles and Mary moved to Hiram, Portage, Ohio. It's likely that Charles' parents and his brothers were also in Hiram at this time.

In 1842 Charles, Mary 5 of their sons and 2 of their daughters joined a wagon train to Iowa. On the way Mary and possibly 2 sons (Gershon & William) died. With the help of local Native Americans, they were buried in the open prairie SW of Eddyville, Iowa.

Charles and his remaining family settled in Monroe, Iowa where Charles worked as a millwright. He was active in the community, e.g, serving on Monroe's first grand jury and petitioning for a new road. His children, who lived in Monroe, were also active in the community. In his later years Charles lived with Demetrius (a wheelwright) and his family and later with, Benjamin (a chairmaker) and his family.

The last record pertaining to Charles was in 1870 when he was 81-years old. Although a gravestone has not been found, it is highly likely that Charles was buried in Cuba Cemetery where many other family members are buried.
