Demetrius Ypslanti was born to Mary Crouch and Charles Bates, a millwright, in Portage, Ohio. Demetrius was 15 years old when he traveled with his parents and younger siblings to Iowa. Sadly, his mother and 2 brothers died on the trip With the help of Native Americans, they were buried on the prairie near Eddyville, Iowa.

Demetrius and his family settled in Monroe County, Iowa where Demetrius worked as a wheelwright and laborer. There he met and married. Frances "Fanny" Hatfield with whom he had the following children:

During the Civil War, Demetrius served in the militia. After the death of his wife, Fanny in 1883, Demetrius married Lucinda Morris, who also preceded him in death.
