Sarah Bates was born to Mary Crouch and Charles Bates in New York. When Sarah was about 9 years old the family moved to Hiram, Portage, Ohio. There, at age 19, she married Philander Lorenzo Tyrrel. Seven years later Sarah, Philander and their first 4 children moved to Caldwell County, Missouri.

By 1843, when Sarah was 28, the family lived in Monroe, Iowa where Sarah's father and other family members were settling. (In 1843, Sarah's mother died on the covered wagon trip from Ohio to Iowa). In Monroe, Sarah's father and husband both served on the first grand jury in Monroe, and they worked together in other civic activities.
