She was born in June 1853 as Trijntje Hoek (= Corner) in the country village Ursem in the midnorthern part of the Dutch western province Noord-Holland, daughter of the 32 years old watermiller (watermolenaar) Jacob Hoek and Maartje Houtkooper. She was named after her paternal grandmother Trijntje Swart.
On 11 June 1855 Trijntje (2 y), her father Jacob Hoek (34 y, loafer), her mother Maartje Houtkoop (29 y) and her brother Bankras (3 y) arrived on the schooner Tarolinta at the port of New York, Castle Garden.
