His Dutch parents Jacob Hoek (34 y) and Maartje Houtkoop (29) arrived on 11 June 1855 with their children Bankras (3) and Trijntje (2) on the schooner Tarolinta at the port of New York, Castle Garden. A year later, in July 1856 he was born in Chicago, very probably as Dirk.

In 1860 Dirk Hock (3 y) lived with his parents and four siblings in the Township of Worth, post office Blue Island, Cook County, Illinois, just south of Chicago, northwest of Thornton Township and west of Calumet Township.

In June 1870 Dorrick [The o is very probably a transcription error; his given name should be Dirk or Derrick] (14 y, born in Illinois), his father Jacob Hook (49, Holland, farmer), his mother Mary (43, Holland), his siblings Catharine (17, Holland), William (11, Illinois), Cornelius (10, Illinois), Peter (9, Illinois), Simon (7, Illinois), Cornelia (3, Illinois) and Jacob (0, Illinois) lived at a rented home in Calumet Township, Cook County, Illinois, just southeast of Chicago.

Richard Hook married on 26 February 1887 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois at the age of 30 years to the 10 years younger Fredricke Laatz, who died in 1902 at the age of about 35 years.

In 1920 Richard Hook (63 y, widower), his daughter Kate (30, born in Indiana) and his son John (24, Indiana) lived in North Township, Lake County, in the utter northwestern part of Indiana.

In 1930 Richard Hook (73, widower) and his daughter Kate (41, Indiana) lived in the village of Lansing, nowadays a southern suburb of Chicago, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

Retired farmer Richard Hook died in September 1935 at the age of 79 years in the village of Lansing, Cook County, Illinois.
